He gave his characters appropriate superpowers. ![]() Del Toro designed a story which would not culminate in the restoration of status quo, and he stuck to his threads. I still think they win, though, because they figured out what to save and why. Not all of the people are saved, and certainly no semblance of status quo gets rescued either. The characters in The Strain are changed by the end, and so is everyone else. It worked, though, because the characters understood what was at stake.Īt the end of a lot of action films, you’re faced with the question: what got saved? We all go back to our lattes? Our naps and couches, and we let this monumental event dissolve into pop history? We’re talking true, Idaho Skunkweed here. None of that dank stuff they’re smoking in my neighborhood. And instead of letting his heroes save the world in the spectacular display of intelligent design manifested by most stories, he played the no-win scenario out. He designed a no-win scenario from the get-go. In The Strain, Del Toro set up end-of-the-world circumstances. ![]() One of the big deal things we talk about in my critique group is having the gall to go there, meaning to identify what would be status quo and to diverge from it to an extent that the scenario of your story becomes unrecognizable as a part of our world. ![]()
